What is ADI?

Acquisition-Driven Instruction (ADI) is our preferred term for the approach to language instruction we have found effective in developing students’ proficiency in joyful, innovative, research-informed ways. The term includes Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI), Comprehensible Input (CI), Total Physical Response (TPR), and Teaching Through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS.)

ADI is Input Forward. We believe that comprehensible input and engaging instructional activities, delivered primarily in the target language, are critical to the development of language proficiency. We therefore prioritize strategies and skills that students find engaging and that provide robust exposure to the language they can understand. In our teaching and coaching, we encourage teachers to prioritize students’ comprehension, community building with students, and communicative purposes for language use in the classroom.
